When we can see the need that is driving the behavior, we can meet that underlying need instead of focusing on controlling the behavior. We develop more compassion and empathy. We equip our child with better ways to communicate their needs. We build connection and trust rather than conflict.

When we are tempted to react to our child’s unpleasant behavior, we can slow down and ask ourselves, “What does this behavior really mean? What need are they trying to meet?”

Posted • I do not always remember this - but it's so essential to look beyond the behavior we see if we want to help kids learn better strategies. The desire for play, autonomy, and fairness are valid needs, even though pushing, aggression, or interrupting are poor strategies to meet those needs.

To communicate effectively, use your body language, tone, and words to show children that you -

➡ understand their point of view.
➡ empathize with their feelings.
➡ recognize the needs motivating their behaviors.

✨ Today, practice uncovering what your child really needs instead of "how to stop the behavior you don't like."

💙💬 This helps your brain start thinking beyond the actions you see so you can more easily respond with compassion...
