Research Spotlight: Coming Out and Coming in to Living with Dementia

In Egale's and the National Institute on Ageing's research report, Coming Out and Coming in to Living with Dementia, we found that 2SLGBTQI communities who experienced social inequities (e.g., due to systems of homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, and racism) are at a higher risk of premature cognitive decline, including dementia. This report provides specific action-oriented recommendations to enhance support for 2SLGBTQI people living with dementia and their primary unpaid carers.

Free Winter Clothing in Toronto: New Circles’ GLOW Program

Staying warm through a Canadian winter shouldn’t depend on income, and New Circles’ GLOW program is one of the city’s most reliable places to get free, good-quality clothing when money is tight. Located in the Thorncliffe Park area but serving several surrounding neighbourhoods, GLOW provides seasonal clothing for adults, seniors, and families at no cost. That includes winter coats, boots, sweaters, and cold-weather accessories, all neatly organized, dignified, and easy to browse.

What makes this program especially helpful for older adults is the comfort and privacy built into the experience. Clients book an appointment, browse like they would in a regular store, and leave with clothing that fits well and feels right for them. Staff and volunteers are trained to work gently and respectfully with seniors, including those who may be new to the city, living on fixed incomes, or managing mobility challenges.

GLOW also accepts referrals from community agencies across Toronto, so if you’re connected to a local service organization, they can often help you access the program quickly. For older adults supporting grandchildren or family members, GLOW offers clothing for all ages, a relief during the expensive winter months.

If you or someone you know could use warm clothing this season, consider reaching out to New Circles to learn more about eligibility and appointment availability. It’s a welcoming, community-driven resource that makes winter a little easier for everyone.
