Se você queria conhecer música underground nos anos 80, tinha que trocar fitinhas com a galera. Hoje, se quiser explorar o projeto mais obscuro da história, basta um clique no YouTube ou Spotify. Mas, se você tinha 12 anos em 1995 e começava sua jornada musical, sua principal fonte de informação e formação tinha nome: Gastão Moreira. VJ original da MTV Brasil, ele comandou programas como o ‘Gás Total’ e o lendário ‘Fúria Metal’ nos anos 90. Foi o Gastão que me apresentou dezenas de artistas que formam a base do meu gosto musical — de Judas Priest a Sepultura, de Megadeth a Type O Negative. O ‘Fúria’ abria com ‘Metal Militia’, e por muito tempo eu nem sabia que era uma música do Metallica. Até hoje, 30 anos depois, quando ouço essa faixa, associo mais ao “Fúria” do que à própria banda. Quantas fitas VHS eu gravei para revisitar os episódios sempre que quisesse!📼 Nos últimos 10 anos, Gastão está à frente do Kazagastão, no YouTube, oferecendo uma curadoria inestimável de tudo de bom que acontece no mundo da música, sem concessões! Assim, ele continua sendo uma das minhas principais fontes de informação e formação musical.🙏🏼 Nesta semana, no quadro “Lançamentos Underground”, Gastão destacou 11 bandas brasileiras que estão produzindo rock autoral de qualidade. E adivinha quem estava no meio? O Paranoia Church, com ‘Back to the Ocean’ — música que escrevi e gravei enquanto a minha pequena tirava suas sonecas. Se o Bruno de 41 anos dissesse para o Bruno de 12 que, dali a 30 anos, o Gastão iria apresentar o clipe da sua música, eu mandaria internar por pura senilidade!😭 Grande Gastão! I’m not into sports, I don’t really play video games, and I don’t do carpentry. Music is my biggest passion. Growing up, if you were a fan of any kind of non-mainstream music, that would bring you closer to a group of people with similar tastes. A lot of those relationships revolved around listening to music together, sharing new discoveries, and giving and taking recommendations. Having left Brazil almost 10 years ago and now being in my early 40s, it feels lonelier every year because I don’t have many people around to share this passion with. No matter how long you live in a new country, relationships are never quite the same as the ones you built when you were 15. And most of my friends back home don’t really listen to the same kind of music as I do anymore, or they never went beyond what we used to listen to 20 years ago. Or for many of them, music just isn’t as important as it used to be. That’s where some of those YouTube channels come in handy. I know some people find Reaction channels silly, but especially during the pandemic, they became an interesting way to discover new music at the “same time” as other people, witness them listen to your favorite artists for the first time, and experience some sense of community again, even if passively—however Black Mirror-ish that may sound. One of the channels I followed was @jimnewstead ‘s. I appreciate it because there isn’t too much over-analysis of technicalities; it is all about simply enjoying good music. Recently, I shared ‘Back to the Ocean’ with Jim, and yesterday, he reacted to the song on his channel. Jim is an extremely knowledgeable and kind guy.
