Today I miss my dad even more!
When I was younger, my memories of Eid always included women in Sudan crying after Eid prayer. My mother would tell me, they’re remembering the people they’ve lost, and for some of them, it’s their first Eid without someone they loved. But I always thought, why are Sudani women so emotional, can’t they just be happy for this one day?
Today, I am one of them.
Every time I saw a man in a white thobe, I thought of him. Every dark-skinned uncle in the crowd reminded me of him. With every takbeer, I remembered his on our drive to prayer.
Today I miss you, Baba, more than ever.
I miss your Eid morning hug. I miss hearing your voice reciting the takbeer. I miss your laughter and your endless jokes. I miss seeing you standing beside Mama in the kitchen, cutting meat for the day ahead.
If your parents are here on Eid, you’re so blessed, hug them tight, take all the pics, and enjoy the day and days to come. Because it sucks without them!
May Allah have mercy on my father and forgive his shortcomings, expand and illuminate his grave, and reunite us with our loved ones in Jannat al-Firdaws. Ameen. 🤍
