I recently heard a great metaphor about life and success.

🎨Many of us see life as a canvas—something to add to, layer with experiences, achievements, and possessions.

But what happens when the canvas is full?
When there’s no room left to add anything meaningful?

It can feel overwhelming, constraining, and even stifling.

👉What if we looked at life differently?

Instead of adding brush strokes to a canvas, what if we viewed life as a block of stone?
A stone that we’re constantly chipping away at to reveal the masterpiece within.

When we chip away, we:

Chipping away encourages us to focus on what truly matters. It’s about removing the distractions and letting our true selves emerge.

With stone, we can continually reshape our lives. If something no longer serves us, we chip it away, allowing room for growth and change.

Chipping away is a journey of self-discovery. It’s about uncovering the essence of who we are and what we’re meant to do.

This approach isn’t just about life—it’s about how we learn and grow.

Being a student wasn’t easy. I remember those school days. The struggle was real – social skills, friendships, and learning academic content. School wasn’t easy for me. I lacked confidence, and my academic skills felt inadequate. I often found myself pulled out of class for extra help, wondering what I was missing.

Little did I know, the challenges I faced stemmed from a working memory deficit. School relied heavily on memorization and regurgitation, which proved difficult for me. I also struggled with writing because I was so focused on spelling and choosing the best words that I often forgot the ideas I wanted to convey.

It wasn't until I became a teacher that I truly understood my own struggles. For most of my 17 years in education, I worked with students in grades 4-8 with Learning Disabilities, helping them compensate for their deficits in order to grasp grade-level work. I worked closely with parents and teachers to ensure students received the support they needed.

As a classroom teacher, I felt the weight of large class sizes with diverse needs. I wanted to meet the needs of every student, but deadlines, curriculum constraints, and reduction in support made it challenging. Despite this, I made it my mission to create a comfortable and supportive learning environment where students felt valued and capable.

Now, as an online math tutor, I bring that same passion for empowering students. With no time constraints, I can work one-on-one with each child, teaching them to think, reason, and learn according to their unique style.

I created Learning with Michelle - The Online Math Teacher to show students they can be "math people" too, regardless of the challenges they face.
