Northern giant hornets 07/30/2024

🐝Attention, Ontario Residents! 🐝

There's been a lot of online chatter about the potential arrival of northern giant hornets in Ontario, but as of now, no confirmed sightings have been reported. These hornets, also known as Japanese giant hornets or "murder hornets," are the largest hornet species in the world and are native to regions like China, Korea, Japan, and northern India. They are known to hunt honeybees and could pose a serious threat to Ontario's agriculture and biodiversity if they were to arrive. While they typically don't attack humans or animals unless provoked, multiple stings can cause severe reactions, including anaphylaxis and death, and regular beekeeping suits won’t protect you; specialized gear is necessary. Although northern giant hornets have been reported in British Columbia and Washington state since 2019, there is no evidence they are present elsewhere in North America, and experts are unsure if they could survive Ontario's winters.

If you think you've spotted one, it's important to report it to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs—details on how to do so can be found on their website. Stay informed and vigilant!🐝🦟
