Featuring Composer: Kaija Saariaho
What music did Kaija herself like?
Kaija was particularly drawn to vocal music, and as great influences she quoted a wide range of artists from Billie Holiday and Lakshmi Shankar to Luciano Berio and Luigi Dallapiccola. In terms of operatic music, her go-tos were Johann Sebastian Bach’s Passions and Alban Berg’s Wozzeck. As for concert music, she had a special fondness for Karol Szymanowski’s first violin concerto. To find out more about all the music that influenced her, particularly from the 20th century canon, you will have to dig into her texts and interviews.
What were her other artistic influences?
Kaija had a strong connection to visual arts, which she shortly studied, and a lot of her works contain explicit references to paintings and films – associations with colors and qualities of light also hold a special place in her work. For this reason she was drawn to intermedia collaborations long before composing operas. She was also a keen and eclectic reader of poetry and found inspiration in a wide range of poems, which she set to music and integrated in other ways into her work.
