In Australia at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, Iran’s women’s national team stood in silence during their national anthem before their opening match against South Korea—a peaceful, powerful act seen around the world.
Days later, before facing the host nation, the players were seen saluting and singing the anthem—amid rising pressure and rhetoric from state‑aligned media back home that branded them “wartime traitors,” sparking urgent calls for their protection.
As the tournament progressed, concern for the squad’s safety grew. Supporters in Australia rallied outside stadiums and surrounded the team bus chanting “Save our girls,” after reports that players signaled for help from inside. Civil society groups petitioned the government to ensure the team can remain safe while decisions are made.

On Monday, new reports indicated that five players had left their hotel seeking asylum—information shared by opposition figure Reza Pahlavi and local community sources, while Australian authorities have not yet confirmed individual claims.

Today in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Hon. Mayor David West, alongside several politicians and dignitaries, stood in solidarity with the Iranian people. He commended Iranian Canadians for their continued advocacy for peace and for calling for an end to the regime in Iran through peaceful and respectful demonstrations around the world.

Mayor West highlighted that in recent weeks, these protests have grown to more than 150,000 participants, with zero incidents reported by Toronto Police. He also expressed his appreciation for the Iranian Canadian community’s respect, unity, and love for their city. The crowd responded with heartfelt chants of “Thank you!”
