One of the most powerful things a leader can do is ask open-ended questions.
The purpose of these questions is not to interrogate others or fix their problems!
Rather, open-ended questions are a great way to really understand another person’s perspective.
I often see my clients making assumptions about why a colleague is underperforming, disengaged, or struggling… without ever really asking!
But curiosity changes everything.
When you slow down, stay open and truly listen, you often uncover things you never would have expected.
In this week’s Leadership in Focus blog, I shared a story about a leader who chose curiosity over judgment with an underperforming team member… and what happened next brought an entire class of leaders to tears!

One of the most common frustrations I hear from people right now is, "I can't get my colleagues to follow through."
It makes sense. Everyone is busy, and everyone has competing priorities. As one of my clients said to me recently, "Your urgency is not my urgency."

The answer is influence!
