$10,000 UTSC Black Flourishing Award: Nominations Now Open
Hello Community,

Graduating from high school and preparing for post-secondary education is a major milestone. For many students, this transition can also come with added barriers, financial pressure, and uncertainty about what comes next.

Since 2013, Walk with Excellence has celebrated graduating students as they take their next steps into post-secondary education.

Established by community leader and A Different Booklist founder Itah Sadu, in collaboration with the Blackhurst Cultural Centre, the Toronto District School Board, and York University-TD Community Engagement Centre, Walk with Excellence honours student achievement, community support, and the pursuit of post-secondary education.

This year, Walk with Excellence returns to the University of Toronto Scarborough, with the launch of the inaugural UTSC Black Flourishing Award.

About the Award

Established by UTSC’s Development and Alumni Relations Office, alongside the Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion Advisory Committee and the Office of the Registrar, the UTSC Black Flourishing Award is designed to support Black student success throughout the post-secondary journey.

The award will recognize two outstanding Black students entering undergraduate studies at UTSC who reflect the values of Black Flourishing, Inclusive Excellence, Mutuality, and Accountability.

Award Value

Each award is valued at $2,000 per year, renewable for up to five years, for a total of $10,000 per student.

Beyond financial assistance, recipients will also receive ongoing mentorship and an annual lunch with the Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion Advisory Committee to connect them with university supports, resources, and services.

Eligibility

Two awards will be granted annually to students who have applied to, been accepted into, and enrolled in an undergraduate program at UTSC.

Eligible students must:

Be graduating high school students in Scarborough
Have applied to, been accepted into, and enrolled in an undergraduate program at UTSC
Be nominated by a TDSB high school educator in the Scarborough area
