Here we have a DynaTac 8000M mobile phone, introduced in 1989 and brought in this week for . And as much as everyone wanted to own one of these back in the day it did have plenty of drawbacks like being prohibitively expensive, having a 60 minute battery life, and taking up to 10 hours to recharge that battery. And it was nicknamed The Brick Phone for a reason as it weighs 2.2lbs and (including antenna) is over 1 foot in length!

Here we have the U-Matic BVU-110 Portable Videocassette Recorder, released in the early 80s/late 70s. The 3/4” U-Matic format was released by Sony in 1971 and was one of the first video formats to contain the videotape inside a cassette. Originally intended for (and rejected by) the consumer market, the U-Matic format found much greater success in the television broadcast industry due to its compactness, reliability, and low cost.

Here’s an ThinkPad Model 510Cs, first released in June 1994. This belonged to the 500 series, the first line of subnotebooks released by IBM. Featuring a 50 MHz 486 CPU, 4MB RAM, and a 200MB HDD, this had decent specs for being such a compact (10” x 7” x 2”) machine, but the tiny 7.7” display must have been tough on the eyes…anyone have a magnifying glass?
