Through the Total Station and What Archaeologists Found There.
💛
This YELLOW total station frames a controlled surface pick-up where our archaeologists are flagging artifacts on the ground surface.
💛
Total Stations are incredible tools for archaeologists, they measure distance, angles, and elevations that allow us to create detailed maps of our sites. Artifacts are individually and precisely recorded, preserving the context of their relationship to the site.

Look at this remarkable point, whose beauty represents the BLACK stripe on our Progress Pride Rainbow of Heritage!
🖤
This stone tool is made of black Hudson Bay Lowland chert and is probably from the Middle Woodland Period (roughly 1,500 years ago).
🖤
Archaeologists can tell when people lived at a site by identifying artifacts like this point, that are known to come from a certain place and time. We can also look at the other artifacts found in the same layer of earth and extrapolate their age as well. This method is known as relative dating (which has nothing to do with accidentally matching with your cousin on a dating app)!
