THE STORY

I was inspired to do this piece in the lead up to the Papa Roach show with The Used in Toronto. I’ve been a fan of Papa Roach since I first heard Last Resort, followed by the album Infest.

I’ve loved all of their albums and the new single Braindead is an absolute throwback banger. But unlike The Used, who I’ve seen live 10+ times, I’ve never been lucky enough to see Papa Roach, so this was an exciting opportunity to check off a bucket list concert.

The concert was made extra special by the fact I was able to take my 8yo son to see his first show. I remember my first show being a core memory, so the fact I was able to share that with him was pretty special. The fact it was also one of my favourite bands of the last 25 years was pretty special too.

The show was incredible. It was one of my absolute favourites and I’ve been to a lot of concerts. My son loved it too. He was dancing and bobbing his head and even seemed to like a bunch of the heavier songs.

For my artwork, I just tried to have fun with it. I once had the opportunity, when I was around 20, to create merch designs for a pretty well-known US band. I asked their manager for lots of direction, trying to be super professional, and he responded with “just rock it!” The ambiguity was too much for me and I just didn’t respond, because it was easier to not try than fail.

In 2025, I’m a lot more at ease with ambiguity. I’ve grown the confidence to just have fun being creative. I’ve learned how to just rock it. That’s why the message in these lyrics really lands with me.
