Is this the beginning of the end for Airbnb?
Big news for Canada’s housing market! Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a plan to tackle the country’s growing housing crisis by targeting short-term rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo. With over 200,000 short-term rentals across Canada that could be turned into long-term housing, the government is stepping in. Cities will now get more resources to crack down on these rentals, unlocking much-needed homes for Canadians.
This initiative is part of the Housing Action Plan, which also includes incentives like removing GST from new rental housing projects to encourage long-term investments. Municipalities will receive $50 million over three years to enforce stricter regulations, and provinces like British Columbia are already imposing fines and limiting short-term rentals to principal residences only.
This could reshape the housing market in cities like Toronto, where short-term rentals have driven up prices and limited availability for buyers and renters alike. And in times like these, having the right real estate team by your side is more important than ever.
