Who doesn’t love a good detour? There’s adventure in the unexpected and joy in knowing you’ve stepped on a path not trod before. However, there’s the odd time you find yourself on a detour in the middle of the desert that turns out to be a raised irrigation levee and not a road as Siri is suggesting you travel long for another 4 miles to your destination. No questioning an erratically intermittent AI while trouping (a bit blindly) through the desert, mistake #1. Quickly, known to be a raised levee only when a farm worker comes barrelling down said “road” after you’ve driven through what looked like a mud puddle in the desert, mistake #2. While we got out -car mostly intact (dried mud in the wheel well and springs in the desert is really just rock hard clay and it’s super hard to get out and makes such an incredible grinding racket that the border guards at the Mexi-Cali border suggest you ‘take care of that soon’ as they wave you through)- that detour wasn’t fun. But it was a whole load of good lessons learned. I’ve been thinking a lot about this latest detour, being disconnected from my studio practice for so long, and I know it was also a whole lot of good lessons learned. Finding those bits of joy along any detour really focuses what you loved about the journey. So much of what goes into making our everyday joyous, even in tiny bits, is truly fuelled by intention, even when happenstance or randomness intervenes. As we move toward the solstice and flower season, I’m feel all the more on track with this intentional part of the path. A bit more time before I can share it all. But it’s looking amazing.
