This study examined actual notes exchanged between healthcare providers and mental health patients and suggests an alarming trend: the use of AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, may worsen psychiatric conditions, including delusions, mania, and suicidal ideation.

The researchers suggest this may be partially explained by the fact that chatbots are highly agreeable, which can lead them to validate and reinforce delusional or harmful patterns of thought rather than challenge them, similar to our everyday experience with family and friends who challenge us.
