This quiet season offers something educators rarely have during the school year.

Space.

Space to rest.

Space to read.

Space to think about the children we taught and the adults we became alongside them.

As I’ve reflected on this past year, I keep coming back to one question.

What if the most important work we did wasn’t a lesson?

Perhaps it was the conversation that helped a child feel they belonged.

The observation that changed our plans.

The song that settled a busy classroom.

The decision to wait rather than rush.

The moment we chose connection before correction.

Those moments rarely appear in our planning books or albums.

Yet they often become the foundation upon which learning is built.

As we begin thinking about September, perhaps preparing the classroom isn’t the only preparation that matters.

Perhaps preparing ourselves begins by remembering what really changed children this year.
