Keeping a newborn cool in warm weather is less about “beating the heat” and more about preventing overheating gently and consistently—because babies don’t regulate temperature as efficiently as adults yet.

Here are the simple, real-world strategies I often share with families:

In warm weather, dress your baby in one light layer more than you’re comfortable in—and no more. A breathable cotton onesie is often enough indoors. Outdoors, think shade and airflow before adding clothing.

Skin-to-skin is wonderful, but in heat it can also trap warmth—so keep it brief and make sure both of you aren’t overheating.

Stroller naps? Keep airflow moving. A stroller fan can help, but avoid covering the stroller completely with blankets or covers, as this can trap heat and reduce ventilation.

Hydration matters too. If breastfeeding, babies may feed more frequently in heat—that’s normal and helpful. For formula-fed babies, continue regular feeds; don’t dilute formula.

A few gentle “watch cues” I always emphasize:
• flushed or very warm skin
• unusual sleepiness or irritability
• fewer wet diapers than usual
• sweating (babies don’t always sweat much, so don’t rely on that alone)

And the simplest rule of all: if you feel too warm, your baby likely does too—so adjust one step cooler.

Warm weather is meant to be enjoyed—but for babies, comfort and safety come from small, intentional adjustments, not big changes.
