Students from the Changing Natures: Environmental and Social History in Costa Rica course, led by Professor Jennifer Bonnell, visited the Los Cusingos to explore its rich biodiversity and conservation legacy.
The visit began with a welcome and introduction by researcher Óscar Barrantes, followed by a tour of the Museum House and a walk along the Naturalist Trail. Along the way, students learned about biodiversity, forest regeneration, seed dispersal, and the ecological roles of wildlife and native plants, while enjoying sightings of monkeys and other forest species.
Through this immersive experience, students gained valuable insights into the relationship between conservation, history, and the natural environment in Costa Rica.

🎨🌿 On May 19, the Global Eco Arts Residency Course, led by Professors Laura Levin and Brandon Vickerd, visited Terraza del Artista in Pérez Zeledón.
During the visit, Melissa Matamoros, President of the Pérez Zeledón Arts and Culture Association, shared the story behind this cultural space, which since 2019 has supported local artists through exhibitions, workshops, and creative collaborations throughout the region.
Participants also learned about the work of artists such as Selene Jiménez and Leda Calderón, who incorporate the reuse of textiles and glass into their artwork, as well as musician and educator David “Vampel”, whose work is inspired by nature and promotes environmental awareness.
We are grateful to Terraza del Artista for welcoming our group and sharing how art, creativity, and community engagement can serve as powerful drivers of cultural and environmental transformation.

On May 8th, students from the Environmental Arts and Food Sovereignty course, led by Professor Martha Stiegman, shared an unforgettable afternoon in Quizarrá through a friendly soccer match with local children and youth.
More than just a recreational activity, this experience created a meaningful space for community connection, cultural exchange, and social engagement. Through sports, laughter, and teamwork, students and community members built strong relationships while fostering mutual respect and understanding.
This interaction reflected the broader goals of the Las Nubes Project by emphasizing the importance of community collaboration, social inclusion, and experiential learning as essential components of sustainable development. By connecting directly with local families and youth, participants gained valuable insight into the social fabric of the community and the power of intercultural exchange.
Experiences like this demonstrate how meaningful engagement beyond the classroom can strengthen leadership, global awareness, and long term community relationships, reinforcing the value of education rooted in real world social connection.
