I want to take a second to share my experience, along with some words of encouragement, to the bands and artists reading this right now who feel like their music is slipping through the cracks.
I cannot tell you how many times I have considered ending this project. Year after year, album after album, it's felt like I've been on the edge of *almost* breaking out of Vancouver - but it hasn't happened, and will very likely not happen. There is a lot of heartache inside of me because of it. I'm guessing a lot of you, in some capacity, have experienced something similar in your lives - of completely dedicating yourself to something, bringing everything you possibly can to the table, only to have things still not work out. I have learned, time and time again, that all I really have is my love of making music. Everything else is a fog.
Here's where things get less depressing: because I wasn't chosen by the music industry, I had to learn how to do literally everything myself. Graphic design, networking, curating, marketing, sorting out merch orders....literally running a business. It's been hard, but hear me out: one of the only reasons why I'm still afloat is because I was forced to develop the skills that every musician ultimately needs. It makes life easier when you have a label running the show for you, but what happens when the trends change in a year and you get dropped? A ton of bands disintegrate because they never developed DIY skills along the way.
My point isn't to convince you that the music industry is evil or anything - I just want to tell you that absolutely incredible experiences await you, even if labels or the industry say no to you. There is so much community, so many cool moments of meeting people at shows, and so much wisdom to gain from existing on the fringes and forging your own path. Doing music part-time, while having side hustles, is how 99% of us are living our lives, so there's no shame in it.
So yeah, don't give up. Popularity comes and goes, and all we're left with is our passion for making music and art - so keep doing it.

AUTUMN 2025 IS UPON US! 🍂 Fall preview: big changes in my personal and professional life, lots of twists and turns with music, higher stakes in my vicious rivalry with , and a slew of upcoming show appearances hellbent on reminding Vancouver that gayliens really do exist.
Some of these shows will be solo, where I will revisit a few deep cuts and test drive some brand new material; some shows will be with on drums 🍇 I will keep you posted.
First show of the season will take place on Thursday, October 2 at . At the start of 2025, I decided that I wanted to spend the year playing shows with the current crop of amazing new bands in the city. I'm getting another chance to do so for this one - opening for the incredibly cool 's LP release. I saw them at Green Auto Fest a few months ago and everyone, myself included, freaked out over them. Equally excited to play with ambitious noise punks and buzzy Nanaimo unit .scum.theband . See you soon 👁
