Athletes embody a generative model or a series of “narratives.” It’s how we expect the world and ourselves to be in order to guide our behaviour. Salience of the world is made via inference. Perception is “direct” if agents predict current and future states based on a history of structural coupling with the environment. The process continuously updates the generative model through the self-organizing capabilities of the player.

“Everyone is the other and no one is himself.”
-Heidegger
Content behaves in idealized situations. They are not physically real. They don’t exist in space / time. And they don’t participate in casual interactions. Practice or training is not jiu-jitsu. Or judo or wrestling. It’s a method—a tool for prediction. Not reality.
No matter how much content is pushed it rarely emerges in live training. Individual athletes structure their actions to what is relevant and viable. They mark their environments. Things have positive or negative value. Some are neutral. Others have no significance at all. There is no fixed pre-given world. Grappling is constituted as dynamic change. Adaptation is always required.
Grappling is precarious. As a consequence athletes cope and adapt by “bringing forth” their own unique “worlds.” Intentional and purposeful ones. In other words: grappling is sense-making through embodied action. Which influences (or perhaps determines) cognition.
