Speak out for equality in Canada!

As many of you know, I work with a company that provides described video for the blind and partially sighted. In Canada, broadcasters are only mandated four hours per week of described video, while closed captioning is at 100%. Why are the blind and partially sighted denied equal access to information and entertainment?

In my work with the blind and low vision community we have learned that this is not a group that advocates loudly for themselves. They tell me how much they enjoy the shows that are described and that they wish there were more. Television connects us socially, and for those who find it difficult to get out of their homes, it is a means of managing loneliness and isolation. In addition, watching television is a social activity often enjoyed with friends. Having described video on more programs allows everyone to enjoy TV together, sighted or not.

Speak out for equality! Please take five minutes of your time to copy and paste these words into the CRTC “Let’s Talk TV” survey at http://crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2014/2014-190.htm

From there, click [Submit an intervention/comment/answer or view related documents] Copy and paste the above 2 paragraphs, or ask me for a pre-written statement to upload to the survey.

The deadline for submissions is June 25, 2014 – less than weeks away!

I know we are all busy, but just a few minutes of your time can go so far in helping this community. If you are unclear about any of this, please send me a message! Thank you so much.
