🎹 Tubular Bells and El Amor Brujo Composer Highlight 🎹

Rounding out our program on April 12th is a beautiful work by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940), "Ocho por Radio".

A violinist, conductor, and composer, Silvestre Revueltas served as associate conductor of the Mexico Symphony Orchestra and taught violin and composition at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City. His film music, chamber music, songs, and works for orchestra are characterized by their rhythmic intensity and a unique blend of folkloric elements that reflect Indigenous Mexican cultural influences.

This April 12th, experience a fiery program where genres collide at our season finale, 💃 Tubular Bells and El Amor Brujo 💃! Mike Oldfield's iconic "Tubular Bells" meets the intensity of Manuel de Falla’s "El Amor Brujo", paired with a brand new piece for two pianos by Marcel Bergmann and Silvestre Revueltas’ colourful "Ocho por Radio".

Mezzo-soprano Renee Fajardo shares her thoughts on El Amor Brujo by Manuel de Falla (arr. Ramsey Sadaka):

"It's really powerful, opulent work, and it's teaching me a lot! The vocal styles and traditions used to perform this work is new to me so learning it has been full of discovery. I'm singing with slightly different vocal colours than I usually work with and it's really cool to work on a piece that encourages this!

It's also a journey of storytelling by poetry, and was primarily a ballet/dance piece so there's so much meaning and imagery to get inspired by. I've been working with a wonderful Argentinian acting coach, who has been helping me understand the poetry and original ballet libretto in ways that only a Spanish-speaking performing artist can. It's such a rich story and i'm lucky to have them as a guide.

When you listen, let your mind create the character telling this story, and imagine her world. Her name is Candelas, and she is both the bewitched and the enchanter, the scorned and the seducer.

Let her remind you of the ways love can be the most exquisite delight and pain."
