July 2nd we ride at dawn… The first song on the album, and now the final chapter from Colleen Rennison’s 2023 record “Persephone”, “The Taker” is a song that challenges the different sides of give and take, when it comes to life, love, art and the inevitable. Not all who wander are lost, and sometimes the unreachable don’t want to be rescued.

Three years after releasing my album “Persephone”, I finally get to give “The Taker” the attention it deserves. This is my favourite song off an album that was a product of suffering, a record of what were the hardest years of my life, but also brought on changes that were so necessary. The notion of taking and giving is interesting, the way we use this word “taker” as often derogatory, yet people wanna know how much we can “take”, as in can you handle what is about to be thrown your way, and in this form it’s rewarded. I never wanted to be someone who took more than they gave, and I know for a lot of years I did. But I’d like to think than in doing so I also took some people places they would have never gone without my veracious nature for more, more, more. More from life, more from music, more from love… so I took as much as a could when I could. And in the long run, I couldn’t actually take a lot of it. So I walked away, from everything. Ran screaming at moments. But destiny has a way of taking the reigns and bringing you back to the path you’re meant for, and I don’t take that for granted. If you had told me when I wrote this song I would be living the life I am today, I wouldnt have believed you.

Shot by in the Las Tunas hills with the girls from and chamacos Aurelia and Boris from the family, it’s a love letter to Baja and the closing of a chapter that I’m grateful for, yet glad is done.

“The Taker” official video is out next Thursday, July 2nd.
