The Bank of Canada has reduced its overnight rate by 25 basis points to 4.75%, marking the first rate cut since the pandemic began. This decision contrasts with previous rate hikes initiated in March 2022 to combat high inflation caused by pandemic stimulus and disrupted supply chains. Governor Tiff Macklem expressed confidence in easing inflation trends, diverging from other major central banks. April's inflation rate stood at 2.7%, with a 1.7% GDP growth in Q1 2024, below forecasts. Although employment increased by 90,000 jobs in April, Macklem warned of persistent inflation risks, considering further rate cuts on a meeting-by-meeting basis. The next rate announcement is slated for July 24.
