Ever caught and cooked a trout in the summer and it tasted "muddy"?
During warm, sunny weather, blue-green algae blooms often develop in lakes. These algae release natural compounds that are absorbed through the trout’s skin and stored in the fatty layer beneath it, creating an off-flavour often described as “muddy.” Learn more in the Stillwater Trout Fishing in Hot Summer Conditions blog.
The good news? As water temperatures cool in the fall, algae growth declines and trout typically return to their normal flavour.
If you want to eat your summer catch, try fishing higher elevation lakes or fish for kokanee.
