⚽World Cup Eve 🇨🇦

The FIFA World Cup group stage begins tomorrow with Canada kicking things off a day later on Friday, June 12th vs Bosnia and Herzegovina at 12:00pm (ET) in Toronto.

Canada has only made three FIFA World Cup appearances, the first time being Mexico 1986, led by team captain and longtime UVic men's soccer coach Bruce Wilson.

Wilson captained Canada through a daunting FIFA World Cup group stage featuring France, Hungary and the Soviet Union, where they went 0-3. Canada is still is in search of it's first-ever World Cup win.

Wilson captained the Canadian national soccer team for ten years and accumulated more caps (51) for the national side than any other player upon his retirement. He helped Canada reach the quarter-finals at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which remains Canada's best-ever men's Olympic soccer result.

Wilson enjoyed a prolific professional playing career before coaching the Vikes men's soccer team for 34 years. Wilson led the Vikes to six conference titles and three U SPORTS national championship banners--most recently in 2011 when UVic last hosted the U SPORTS championship on home turf.

This fall (Nov. 2026), the men's soccer team will once again play host to the U SPORTS Men's Soccer Championship at Centennial Stadium. Will it be the year we bring the Sam Davidson Memorial Trophy back to the island?
