Clayoquot Wilderness Resort: Award-Winning Clean Energy Microgrid ☀️

In August 2024, Hakai Energy Solutions completed an off-grid solar and battery microgrid at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, one of B.C.’s most remote retreats. The system features 1,512 solar panels (824 kW) paired with a 1.6 MWh battery storage system, reducing diesel consumption by 80% and offsetting roughly 480,000 kg of carbon annually.

With this system, the resort can:
◆ Store and use clean energy efficiently
◆ Ensure reliable, quiet power in an off-grid environment
◆ Lead in sustainable, resilient hospitality

This was Hakai’s largest off-grid project to date and was recognized as Electrical Contractor of the Year at the Vancouver Island Building Industry (VIBI) Awards in 2025. The award celebrated the technical complexity of installing B.C.’s largest off-grid solar and battery microgrid in a location accessible only by seaplane or boat, highlighting Hakai’s commitment to sustainability, resilience, and innovative clean energy solutions.

Looking back at 2025, we’re proud of the solar projects that shaped this year. From remote resorts to community spaces, industry partners, and family homes, each installation reflects innovation, collaboration, and progress toward a cleaner future. Here are a few highlights:

1. Nootka Sound Resort – A remote West Coast gem now powered by the sun. This installation supports sustainable tourism and reduces diesel reliance in one of BC’s most breathtaking locations.

2. Cedar Hill Middle School – Supporting the next generation with a solar-powered roof and hands-on learning. Students can monitor the system in real time, gaining experience with solar energy and seeing how the weather affects production.

3. Mapei – Solar energy at an industrial scale. This system is lowering peak demand, boosting on-site efficiency, and helping a global manufacturer meet its sustainability commitments.

4. K’ómoks First Nation – A community-wide shift to clean energy, with solar installed on around 30 homes and 4 multiplex buildings. This initiative supports energy independence, reduces long-term costs, and helps build a more sustainable future for the K’ómoks community.

5. Bailey Studio – Creative spaces deserve creative energy solutions. This custom solar system powers their studio sustainably while reducing overhead for local arts and culture.

6. Residential Installs – From coastal cabins to urban homes, more households than ever are switching to clean, affordable solar—saving money and lowering their carbon footprints.

Each project brings us closer to a brighter, more sustainable future. Here’s to even more solar success in 2026!
