At just 15 months old, Tilly Lockey contracted meningitis. It cost her both hands, her forearms, and her toes. Doctors gave her almost no chance of making it through the night.

She did. And 19 years later, she made history again.

Tilly has spent nearly a decade as a test subject and advocate for Open Bionics, a British robotics company building the world's most advanced prosthetics. This year, she became the first person on the planet to wear their newest creation: the Hero Pro.

These are the first bionic hands ever to be fully wireless and completely waterproof. No cables. No compromises. Just wireless sensors embedded in her socket that read her muscle signals and translate them into movement.

She can detach one hand entirely, set it down, and still control it with her mind. It crawls across a table and back to her on its own; a hand with no body attached, moving because she willed it to.

The numbers behind it: four years of development, over a thousand amputee users providing feedback, and 2.5 million dollars invested to get the tech right. The result is a hand twice as fast as anything else on the market, with full 360 degree wrist rotation and a lifting capacity of 35 kilograms.

Tilly didn't just receive this technology. She helped build it, testing prototypes and shaping every iteration for years before the world ever saw the finished product.

She once said the early prosthetics she wore as a child could only open and close. Now she has hands that move like nothing else on earth, and she's still not finished pushing what's possible.
