Isn’t this true!
Leading Kids through this pandemic!
Grown Kid: What was it like during the Corona epidemic?
Mom: [starts laughing] Ohhhhhh it was hard.
Grown Kid: How did you handle it?
Mom: I honestly don’t know. I just did. There wasn’t another option.
Grown Kid: Were you scared?
Mom: Yup. Our whole world flipped upside-down within a matter of days. It was weird more than anything.
Grown Kid: What was the worst part?
Mom: Ummmm…probably not knowing what was going to happen, and feeling disconnected from people. Do you remember it?
Grown Kid: I mean, I remember bits and pieces. I remember not going to school for a while and missing my friends. I remember baseball being cancelled and not really understanding why, but mostly, I remember movie nights, and eating dinner together every night. I remember having reading parties, and sending videos to our family. I remember sitting on our lawn chairs in the front yard and waving to neighbors. I remember a whole lot of little things, happy moments. I had no idea how bad it was until I got older.
Mom: That’s what parents do for their kids. You’ll do it someday for yours too. We bring peace to crazy, and we instill hope over fear. We keep things as simple as possible when everything is chaotic. We laugh. We go into the shower and cry, and then come right back out and make dinner with a smile on our face so everyone gets fed. We don’t hide our feelings, or necessarily hide what’s going on, but we do put on a brave face and lead with truth. We make our houses safe places and spaces of refuge during storms, and we just keep on loving our people, whatever that takes.
Grown Kid: Thanks, mom.
Mom: You did really get on my ever-lasting nerves wanting snacks every five seconds though when school wasn’t in session, and grocery stores were running out of food, so having that conversation twenty times a day about drove me nuts.
Grown Kid: [starts laughing] Sorry, mom.
Mom: That’s okay. You’ll have the same conversation with your kids someday and I am REALLY looking forward to that.
