James Bay Community Project (JBCP) is a community organization with a long history of actively serving James Bay and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Good organizations don't happen by accident. They are built by people who care enough to show up, ask thoughtful questions, and help chart a path forward.

Today, several members of the JBCP Board gathered for a planning session focused on the future of our organization and the community we serve.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication, wisdom, and generosity of our volunteer board members. Their commitment behind the scenes helps strengthen JBCP and ensures we can continue supporting connection, belonging, and wellbeing throughout James Bay.

From May 31 to June 6, Canada celebrates National AccessAbility Week, recognizing the achievements of persons with disabilities and the importance of building communities where everyone can participate, contribute, and belong.

For us at JBCP, accessibility means more than ramps or elevators. It means being open and responsive when community members tell us what they need — and working together to create spaces where those needs can be met.

Many of the programs we offer today began when someone shared an idea or reached out for support. Our Low Vision Group is one example. It grew from community members who identified a need 26 years ago and were willing to help address it. Julie, the group's founder, is still a regular participant today.

And according to Darrel, our volunteer, the photo below may be the very first group photo in the program's history!

We're grateful to be part of a community that continues to show us new ways to build accessibility, together.

“Shelley somehow always knows what to pull off the rack!”

We hear versions of this all the time from people visiting our Community Closet.

Whether someone is looking for an outfit for a job interview, a special event, or simply wanting to feel a little more confident in themselves again, our store manager Shelley has a remarkable eye for helping people feel seen, comfortable, and cared for.

More than once, someone has walked in convinced they wouldn’t find anything that suited their shape, size, or taste… only to leave smiling, surprised, and carrying an outfit they love (actually, it's rarely just ONE outfit!)

And every dollar spent at the shop goes directly back into supporting community-based programs at JBCP.
If you haven’t visited the Community Closet yet, come by and say hello.
