When newcomer families face violence affecting youth in their community, support and information can make a real difference.

One of our WPSO-Canada members runs an informal support group for newcomer women and families whose young family members are experiencing violence in the community. Through conversations, guidance, and education, she supports mothers and youth by sharing information, raising awareness, and helping families find safer ways to respond to these challenges.

As June comes to a close, WPSO-Canada reflects on bringing members together for Women Peacebuilders and Advocacy in Canada: Understanding Pathways for Influence and Change, as part of the campaign.

The training explored Canada’s Women, Peace and Security commitments, including UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and its pillars of participation, protection, prevention, and relief and recovery. Participants also learned how advocacy can influence policy and public decision-making through meetings with elected officials, public consultations, coalition building, community forums, media, and policy briefs.

Through group activities, members practiced developing advocacy messages by identifying an issue, target audience, evidence, a clear solution, and a call to action. The session also covered how to prepare for advocacy meetings, identify decision-makers, and follow up effectively.

The workshop created space for Afghan women and other women peacebuilders to share community concerns, strengthen their knowledge, and build confidence to advocate for inclusion, safety, recognition, and resources for women-led peacebuilding.

On June 25, WPSO-Canada members from across Ontario gathered in the Waterloo Region at the Kindred Centre for Peace Advancement (CPA) for a workshop on Women Peacebuilders in Canada: Pathways for Advocacy, Influence, and Change.

As part of the campaign with ICAN - Women, Peace & Security, members shared their advocacy work, reflected on the role of women peacebuilders in Canada, and explored how women can influence policy, strengthen communities, and advance peace through collective action.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to these meaningful conversations. Together, we continue to build stronger networks of women leaders and peacebuilders across Ontario.
