Originating in France in the year 2018, an animal welfare group titled “Solidarite Peuple-Animal” officially began 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 🐾

According to the Canadian SPCA, there are over 80,000 cats and dogs abandoned every year nation wide. This number does not include other species (such as reptiles, birds, livestock, and exotics) and non-reported events. 💔

This day was created to raise awareness of abandoned animals, and to hopefully spread information on alternative actions. Prevention before the need for abandonment is key to reducing the homeless-pet population. 📣

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭? 🤔

- Researching Species (Behaviour, Common Health Problems, Age Related Changes/Needs, etc)
- Researching Species Specific Needs (Nutrition, Environment, Supplements, Vaccines, Deworming, Enrichment, etc)
- Understanding Cost (Daily, Extra Health Care, Emergency, Insurance, After Life Care)
- Creating a Healthy, Low Stress and Environment
- Slow and Positive Interactions are best for Introductions if there are Multiple Pets/Livestock
- Creating a Healthy Relationship with Pet (Time to Spend, Ability to Offer any Training or Walks, etc)
- Developing a Relationship with Local Veterinarian

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭? 🐾

- Rehoming to Friends or Family
- Advertising (Word of Mouth, Posters, Online Ad, etc)
- Contact Local Veterinary Clinic (Further Online Reach, Might have Further Advice, or Offer Contacts)
- Reach out to Local Shelters (Foster Homes, etc)
- Contact the Alberta SPCA

The internet is full of information and it can be very daunting to sort through 😵‍💫 The trick is to know where to look, and how to utilize the information that you find. 🤓

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫: 👀

When researching information on the internet, consider the source that is providing said information. Is this a chat group? A blog? Perhaps a social media post? Is this information coming from a research facility such as a University, or a Veterinarian sourced website?

When “Googling” any topic, it is always best to target websites from a reliable source, as unofficial sources can spread misleading information that may either be incorrect, or may partain to a different situation - causing misunderstandings. Clinics also want to strongly caution pet owners that with the vast amount of information available, the internet can provide answers that can often lead to extreme or uncommon cases.

On that note, Veterinary Clinics also want to caution owners about treatments and home remedies, as some doses and ingredients may be toxic to their pet.
