StudyUp Tip of the Week: Do Your Homework!
Some people don’t realize that even when you have left school, it doesn't mean that you will no longer have to do homework. For example, when searching for a job, you need to do more than simply look at the ads and listings posted by companies that are hiring. Performing a solid search of each company on your radar is highly recommended. Searching out the company can help in a couple of ways.
First and foremost, you can decide if any of the places are actually worth working for. A simple Google search can produce negative articles and employee complaints; both of which are red flags that you should take into consideration. Second, knowing all you can about a prospective employer will help you put the right foot forward when it comes to the interview stage. Questions such as “Why do you want to work here?”, and “Do you have any questions for me?” are famous for catching people who have not done their research on a given company.
Let’s face it. Doing the research shows the employer that you are serious and not afraid to do the necessary preparation. Being thorough will set a precedent for your future behaviour. More than ever, today companies are looking for long term prospects due to the high costs of training and orientation. Make sure you appear like someone worthy of a long term relationship! So, the next time you're gazing at those job ads, do a little more digging. Look deeper into the companies and do your homework. It will likely pay off in the end.
