A Banquet to Beat All Banquets
Kildonan, Winnipeg, Manitoba
What a feast it was! Ten turkeys, 120 pounds of potatoes peeled, chopped, and boiled; heaps of carrots prepared; and bowls of gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and bite-sized tarts for dessert.
About 20 volunteers worked tirelessly in the kitchen the day before, cooking, peeling, chopping, and organizing — an influence of Mennonite ingenuity at its best, even though it is a Baptist Church. Before the meal, each person with a plate picked a popsicle stick from jars placed every few feet along the long table. Each stick was labelled with a food item — such as “stuffing” — to be collected from the kitchen and delivered to the table. It was a creative and efficient system, and a learning experience for me. This is also how dirty dishes were returned to the kitchen.
Following the meal, boxes of food were packed up and given to seniors to take home. In total, 250 tickets were sold, with approximately 175 people attending this enormous Thanksgiving and harvest celebration after Sunday service. Another team of volunteers cleaned the space and kitchen in 20 minutes after the meal.
It truly was a community effort — and a banquet for me to remember!

Caring for Neva
Looking after Neva — a sweet, calm, and easy-going 6-year-old White Shepherd/Husky mix — in Vieux Limoilou, Quebec City, from May 28 to June 19, 2025. She’s a gentle soul who enjoys her routine, a few good walks each day along the St.Charles River and lots of chill time.
Ecole de Cirque de Quebec/ Quebec Circus School is housed in a huge old church.

A late afternoon at the Vancouver Art Gallery felt like a vibrant party, alive with beautiful people and creative energy. Vancouver never ceases to amaze me! The gallery was brimming with visitors from around the world and all walks of life, gathered to celebrate the bold, expressive work of Quebec painter and sculptor Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923–2002), a key figure in the 'Les Automatistes ' movement.
One highlight for me was seeing "Le Grand Jean-Paul", a life-size bronze sculpture of Riopelle by Roseline Granet, created in 2003. It was installed in Place Jean-Paul Riopelle in Montreal, just off St. Antoine Street. In the piece, Riopelle stands with his face turned to the right, one hand on his hip, and a foot stepping slightly forward. The granular texture gives it a powerful sense of energy and motion—he almost seems ready to walk right down the stairs and out of the gallery. I truly enjoyed the experience, even if I felt tired and dizzy after three hours of art and crowds!
