This is a question we get all the time, and while many people use quartz or granite interchangeably, or as synonyms for stone in general, there are some major differences.

Both quartz and granite are cut and fabricated in the same way, are similarly durable when it comes to general wear and tear, and with proper care will look beautiful for decades.

Granite is a natural stone, which means it's cut directly from quarries into slabs, and each piece is different. Different colours and patterns are the result of granite formations in different places, from all over the world. Because it's a natural stone, imperfections and inconsistencies are part of the charm and unique character. No two granite countertops look identical. As something that is naturally formed, it's also ideally suited to outdoor applications, where heat and cold fluctuations can occur. Granite is also extremely resistant to heat. to keep it looking its best, granite needs to be sealed to keep liquid from absorbing into it, and while all granite countertops we sell are sealed with a 10-year sealer, it will likely need to be reapplied annually after that. (Granite sealing is a simple process you can easily do yourself at home).

While quartz itself is a naturally occurring stone, quartz countertops are not made the same way. In contrast, quartz countertops are made of a mix of ground quartz (chips or dust) and resin. The countertops are manufactured into a wide variety of patterns and colours that are flawlessly consistent from slab to slab. While quartz is extremely durable, the resin tends to be the weak spot and the finish can dull or yellow under extreme conditions (high heat, high levels of sunlight etc), making it more suitable for indoor use (and why we recommend protecting it from hot pans or small appliances).

While both types of stone are extremely durable, it's possible that quartz and granite can stain and chip so wiping spills promptly and protecting the stone from heavy or sharp tools is recommended (especially at exposed edges and corners). Under normal wear and tear, both types are likely to look beautiful for a very long time.
