For over a decade, 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 and Wild Earth Allies have been at the forefront of protecting Kahuzi Biega National Park through research, reforestation, and community livelihood support.

Securing the future of this vital ecosystem demands constant awareness-raising among grassroots communities. That is why we recently brought together local youth, in presence of community conservation committees, the ISTD Mulungu, and the Kahuzi Biega National Park—represented by its Community Conservation unit (COCO)—for an awareness session.

Together, we brainstormed 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶-𝗽𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 to preserve for as long as possible the invaluable benefits provided by this last refuge of the Grauer's gorilla, including climate regulation, water supply, essential medicinal resources, and many others.

This session sparked a promising community commitment to further amplify the voice for protecting this park of global importance and its biodiversity. 🦍🌿✨

𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 is committed to unveiling the biological richness and conservation status of Grauer’s gorillas and chimpanzees in the Itombwe Natural Reserve (𝗥𝗡𝗜), in collaboration with the 𝗜𝗖𝗖𝗡.

Last week in Itombwe, we trained management and field teams in parataxonomy and biomonitoring methods. We also officially handed over state-of-the-art equipment to the reserve managers to support trackers and eco-guards in their daily activities.

Major Success: Former poachers have been converted and have joined the ranks of the eco-guards, now committing themselves to the protection of biodiversity.
