From 50 chickens to a growing poultry enterprise creating jobs for young people in Ethiopia’s Somali Region.

With support from the ILO PROSPECTS programme, Hussien Saleman and his wife transformed a modest side business into a thriving multi-branch poultry farm, now operating across multiple sites, employing young workers and strengthening local supply chains in Jigjiga.

Through entrepreneurship training and a Business Plan Competition grant, Hussien gained the skills and resources to expand production, increase income and invest in the future of his community.

His story highlights how skills development, enterprise support and access to finance can help entrepreneurs turn ideas into sustainable businesses that contribute to local economic development and decent work.

🔧 Recognizing Skills, Unlocking Opportunity in Uganda

Across Uganda’s refugee settlements, refugees and host communities are transforming informally acquired skills into nationally recognized qualifications through (RPL).

Supported by the ILO under the PROSPECTS programme funded by the Government of the Netherlands, the initiative is helping skilled workers access decent work, grow enterprises and strengthen economic inclusion.

From welding and tailoring to solar installation and agribusiness, certified workers are securing contracts, increasing incomes and creating jobs in their communities.
