⁣Miranda Wang first learned the scale of the plastic problem in 8th grade with her friend Jeanny Yao when they visited a city waste recycling plant in Vancouver, Canada. She discovers that even plastics that are put into the curbside recycling bin are exported overseas to developing countries where it becomes ocean pollution. Years later, she discovered a chemical process that can transform tons of end-of-life of plastic into valuable liquids in just a few hours.⁣

⁣Miranda founded BioCellection, a company that uses a method that specifically targets polyethylene, a cheap form of plastic that is recycled less than 3% of the time. Despite being the most used plastic in the US, much of this plastic is rejected from recycling plants because it’s covered in dirt, food or grime.⁣
⁣ ⁣
⁣Miranda adopted a liquid catalyst that can destabilize and break down the plastics into liquid chemicals without causing surface contaminants to react. Additionally, the process is completed quickly—it takes only three hours for the plastic to break down.⁣

⁣The resulting liquid chemicals can then be used to make materials like nylon, which is commonly used in the fashion and automotive industry.
