Join us tomorrow in Geneva for a high-level side event on safeguarding civil society space at the UN, organised by the International Commission of Jurists and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.

Our Executive Director will be sharing her experience as a civil society advocate having a longstanding engagement with UN human rights mechanisms. She will be speaking alongside Permanent Representatives of Ireland, Colombia, the Marshall Islands and the Gambia, the Deputy Permanent Observer of the EU, and the Secretary General of the ICJ.

At a time when both NGOs and the UN system are facing growing pressure, MENA Rights Group remains committed to ensuring that the voices of civil society and those impacted by human rights abuses are heard by UN bodies.

🌍How does “counter-terrorism” facilitate transnational repression in the MENA?

In the MENA region, the Arab Interior Ministers Council (AIMC) (الأمانة العامة لمجلس وزراء الداخلية العرب), can circulate arrest warrants to Arab League states to facilitate the arrest and extradition of wanted individuals. In practice, the AIMC has increasingly facilitated the political extraditions of activists and human rights defenders on terrorism and security-related charges.
