WATER CONSERVATION FROM THE GROUND UP

Next up in our case studies: how to tackle the challenges of water management in a new town.

AECOM and several partners ran a mass water balance study for a new 100,000 square-metre office park and 3,000 home development in North West Cambridge in England. The partners designed an innovative system to capture rainwater and operate a "grey water" system that reduced anticipated consumption of treated, potable water from 125 litres per day to 80. SCORING CITY RESILIENCE IN THE USA, CHILE AND ANGOLA

Here's our next case study, which looks at how to measure urban resilience.

Stamford, in the USA, Puerto Montt, in Chile, and the Angolan capital Luanda held workshops with multiple stakeholders to complete the UN City Disaster Resilience Scorecard. The workshops were held over one or two days and were facilitated by IBM and, in the case of Stamford, by the engineering
company AECOM.

The workshops were notable in identifying both technical requirements, and also gaps in understanding and communications between different agencies that could easily
have, if left unaddressed, led to a compromised disaster
response, or to development and other activity that would have
weakened resilience in the longer term.
