Why Switzerland keeps crossing the Alps 🇨🇭🏔️

Switzerland lies at the crossroads of Europe, yet much of its territory is covered by mountains. For centuries, the Alps have been both a natural barrier and a strategic passage connecting northern and southern Europe.

Long before modern tunnels, routes such as the Gotthard Pass played a central role in trade and travel across the continent. In 1882, the first Gotthard railway tunnel transformed mobility by allowing trains to pass through the Alps rather than over them, making transport faster, safer and more reliable.

Today, projects such as the 57-kilometre Gotthard Base Tunnel continue this long history of connectivity. From mountain passes to world-record rail tunnels, the objective remains unchanged: connecting Europe across the Alps.
