After the briefing, each couple got an instructor to guide us underwater. At first, it was surreal and nerve-wracking, breathing underwater like that. But soon enough, we were posing by a Poseidon statue 10 meters down! We spotted a shark and an eel, though I noticed the coral wasn’t very colorful—likely from coral bleaching. Still, the experience was unforgettable.

One cultural norm I’ve embraced from living in Colombia—especially in Pasto, which is a much smaller city than Medellín—is making lunch the main family meal of the day rather than dinner. It’s so much healthier for digestion and just makes more sense. I’d rather not prepare a large meal right before bedtime, spending the whole evening cooking and cleaning. In Pasto, everyone would take a two-hour break from work and school in the middle of the day to have lunch with their families. I loved that!

"In terms of my personal experience in Colombia, I’ve only had one negative incident: I was mugged in Pasto. In retrospect, it’s kind of a funny story because I think the mugger was holding a BBQ fork instead of a knife (though I wouldn’t want to get stabbed with that either!). As a first-time mugging victim, I panicked and handed over my backpack, purse, and even my jacket. The only reason I could tell it was a BBQ fork was that he had to stop to pick up all the random things I dropped! I like to think that after that encounter, he told his friends not to rob the overly dramatic “gringa.” As my then-boyfriend, now-husband, later pointed out, he probably just wanted my phone."
