"Taxi Consilium is the spiritual conjointment of four seasoned musicians emerging from the unwholesome Macedonian jazz æther — a dense ecosystem that includes projects such as Cobalt Code Unit, Yordan Kostov Quintet, Filip Bukrshliev Trio, Fighting Windmills, and Svetlost Odron Ritual. Formed in Skopje in 2021 and operating under the PMG Jazz umbrella, the quartet approaches jazz not as a genre but as a late-night condition. Their music sounds like it was conceived in motion: back seats, idle engines, cracked dashboards, conversations half-heard and immediately forgotten. Taxi Consilium channels the eternal, unlicensed wisdom of taxi drivers prowling desolate streets at three in the morning — men who know the city better than its maps and trust no official narrative. This is after-midnight music in its purest form: unfiltered, suspicious, and slightly unwell. Led by the narcotic cry of bass and Bb clarinet, the band’s sound unfolds in long, shadow-drenched arcs. Guitars scrape and shimmer like neon reflected in wet asphalt, the double bass groans with physical insistence, and the drums refuse politeness, opting instead for momentum, friction, and threat. The result is free jazz that doesn’t posture — it loiters. If Eric Dolphy were rewritten as a character in a Thomas Pynchon novel — a doped-up horn man moonlighting as a private investigator, trailing ghosts through municipal corruption and personal ruin — he might sound something like this. Taxi Consilium’s music is the wail of a lonely clarinet playing counterpoint to dim sounds of fornication through thin walls; shadows and smoke, distant laughter that may or may not be ominous. A free-jazz hard-on in a dark alley, equal parts ecstasy and regret. With releases on PMG Jazz and Aksioma, Taxi Consilium continues to refine a language that rejects daytime clarity in favor of nocturnal truth. This is not music that explains itself. It waits, idling, meter running."
