🇬🇧Terraforming marks May 10, 1942, the day the last group of Jewish detainees from the Staro Sajmište camp was murdered in a gas van—a mobile gas chamber known as a dušegupka. According to the military administration of the German occupation authorities, this atrocity concluded the process of the destruction of Jews in occupied Serbia.
May 10 has been declared the official Holocaust Remembrance Day in Belgrade.
Focusing on the crimes that took place in our immediate surroundings, on the very streets we walk every day, helps us more deeply understand the mechanisms and scale of the Holocaust. Following the recommendations of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), we emphasize the importance of memorializing local history and connecting the past with the present to strengthen critical thinking. A vital theme in this context is the rise of antisemitism, which is evident globally, including within our own society.
By remembering the past, we recognize our duty to safeguard democracy, the rule of law, and human dignity.
