Africa Day 2026 | Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve Agenda 2063

Water is life. Sanitation is dignity. Access to both is a fundamental human right.

As we celebrate Africa Day today, we are reminded that the vision of a prosperous, integrated, and people-centred Africa the Africa envisioned in African Union cannot be achieved without ensuring clean water and safe sanitation for every home, every school, and every community across our continent.

Achieving Agenda 2063 requires bold investments, sustainable water management, resilient sanitation systems, innovation, education, and strong political commitment. A healthier and more equitable Africa begins with guaranteeing access to clean water and safe sanitation for all.

On this Africa Day, let us reaffirm our collective responsibility to build an Africa where no one is left behind.

It was a great honor to welcome Dorothee Bär, Federal Minister of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, on board the RV Polarstern during expedition PS154/2.

Her visit provided a valuable opportunity to showcase the important scientific work being carried out in polar and marine research, while also highlighting the importance of international cooperation in science, innovation, and climate research.

We sincerely thank Minister Bär for her presence on board, her interest in the ongoing research projects, and the inspiring exchange with scientists, students, and early-career researchers participating in the expedition.

It was a pleasure and privilege to have her with us during expedition PS154/2.
