Stepping onto M/Y “Christina O” is like walking through a living gallery of 20th-century historythat has been meticulously well kept and refitted over the years. Originally a Canadian anti-submarine frigate named the HMCS Stormont, she served in the Battle of the Atlantic and was present during the D-Day landings before being transformed into the world’s most legendary superyacht.
The Evolution of an Icon
In 1954, Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis purchased the vessel for just its scrap value of $34,000. He spent a staggering $4 million—equivalent to roughly $50 million today—to refit her into a floating palace, renaming her after his daughter, Christina. The yacht set a new standard for post-war luxury, featuring opulent interiors that combined naval strength with the elegance of an English country manor.
A Guest List of Giants
M/Y “Christina O” has been the backdrop for some of the most significant social and political meetings of the last century:
• Political Summits: It was the site of the first meeting between Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy in 1957. Churchill was a frequent guest, taking nine cruises on the vessel.
• Royal & Presidential Weddings: The yacht hosted the wedding reception for Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III of Monaco, and it was the setting for Onassis’s own wedding to Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968.
• Hollywood Royalty: The decks have been graced by stars like Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and John Wayne.
Whether it’s the history of its wartime service or the echoes of mid-century glamour, M/Y “Christina O” remains the ultimate symbol of a bygone era of opulence.
