The 2026 Gutenberg Prize of the International Gutenberg Society and the state capital Mainz goes to Erik Spiekermann.
Erik Spiekermann is a designer and typographer, type designer, entrepreneur, and author of international renown. Some of his typefaces, such as FF Meta and ITC Officina, are considered modern classics. In the early years of the internet, his company FontShop set standards for the global online distribution of typefaces, thus sustainably creating the infrastructure of digital type design. In addition to his work as a type designer, Erik Spiekermann, through his companies MetaDesign and EdenSpiekermann, has shaped the visual identity of major corporations and public institutions. He has also developed typeface solutions for transportation systems and media. For many years, he has been committed to preserving the letterpress printing process.

Yesterday, four of our Graphic and Digital Design graduates presented their final projects to the public. They discussed their research, concepts and design solutions. These presentations, along with those of students from the Interactive Media and Animation programme, formed part of the opening of the Department of Design and Multimedia’s annual exhibition on the university campus.
Sofia presented "Visual Communication of Femininity Beyond Stereotypes in Women-Oriented Branding", while Veronica discussed "Reimagining the Classics for Young Readers: A Case Study of Penguin Classics". Polya presented "Experiential Graphic Design: Branding the Athalassa National Forest Park", and Yana presented "The Use of Folklore Visual Elements in Contemporary Branding: The Case of Bulgarian Brand Identities".
Thank you to Poppy for organising this event. As always, credit for the GDDes exhibition goes to Maria, the GDDes Programme Coordinator, as well as Marianna and Niki. We would also like to thank Yiannis for his significant contribution, along with the rest of our colleagues who supported this effort in various ways.
Last but not least, we would like to thank all our students, both current and former, as well as parents, colleagues and everyone else who honoured us with their presence yesterday. A special thank you goes to the parents and family members who travelled from abroad to celebrate this memorable occasion with us.
