𝐆𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 of compressed ethylene at the inlet of LDPE reactors is a valuable tool to verify and monitor the performance of the process. The ability to measure volumetric or mass flow of high-pressure ethylene opens new insights for process control and mass balancing.

The high pressures required of over 𝟏𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝐛𝐚𝐫 (21750 psi) are characteristic of the polymerization processes of low-density polyethylene.

In view of the challenging process conditions, a LDPE plantoperator in Japan specifically searched for a measuring solution that does not require any intervention in the piping system. Any installation that presents a risk of leakage should be avoided if possible. In their research for non-intrusive flow measurement technology, the process engineers almost automatically came across Flexim.

Clamp-on ultrasonic technology offers a practical advantage for non-intrusive measurement. Testing its suitability before purchasing can be done without disrupting plant operations. After a successful trial measurement with the portable gas flow meter G608, the LDPE plant operator decided to install six stationary Flexim G831 ultrasonic systems on the pressure side of the hyper compressor.

The acoustic measurement technology is characterized by its extraordinary dynamics, which now make it possible to record the start-up and shut-down phases of the system.
