APIRA's CEO, Iosif Koutsoumbidis FCCA, MSc, MBA had the privilege of participating in the 4th ELIPYKA International Conference in Athens.
The conference brought together scientists, engineers, industry leaders, public authorities, Fire Service representatives, insurance stakeholders, and other key actors working at the intersection of fire safety and resilience.
It was a valuable opportunity to exchange views with distinguished professionals, including Dr. Ioannis Kontoulis, President of ELIPYKA; Prof. Dionysios Kolaitis of the National Technical University of Athens; and Prof. Panos Kotsovinos of the University of Patras, as well as senior executives, institutional representatives, and members of the ELIPYKA Board of Directors.
A key part of APIRA’s presence at the conference was the discussion around our recent analysis combining the new National Fire Risk Map with statistical data.
The conclusion is striking:
Approximately 75% of both Greece’s population and its residential buildings are located within high fire-risk zones.
This finding changes the focus of the conversation. The issue is no longer limited to emergency response. It is about preparedness, reducing exposure, and protecting residential assets before a wildfire occurs.
For us at APIRA, this reinforces a core belief: the future of fire safety for residential buildings lies in prevention-led thinking, practical resilience, and innovative protection systems designed for real-world risk. We are proud to contribute to this important shift.

We get this question every day: Why Do Houses Burn in Wildfires?
When people think about wildfire protection, they often focus on one central question: Are the walls fireproof? It sounds logical. If a house is built with concrete, brick, or another non-combustible material, many assume it has a strong chance of surviving a fire.
In many wildfire events, the main reason a house is lost is not that the exterior walls themselves caught fire first. The greater danger often comes from ember intrusion and extreme radiant heat reaching the building’s vulnerable points. Once fire enters through an opening, the interior can ignite, and the structure may then be destroyed from the inside out.
This is a critical distinction. It changes the way we should think about wildfire safety, building vulnerability, and real protection.
Why Houses Burn in Wildfires: The Real Danger Is Not the Walls, but the Openings | Apira - Wildfire protection for homes Learn why houses burn in wildfires. Discover why embers, radiant heat, and vulnerable openings like windows, doors, and vents are the real threat.

Wildfires are no longer rare, distant events. Across countries such as Greece, Italy, Southern France, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Germany, the United States, and Australia, extreme heatwaves and prolonged droughts have reshaped fire seasons.
Homeowners are asking one direct question:
Will APIRA save my home during a wildfire?
The honest answer is this: APIRA significantly reduces the risk of wildfire damage. However, no system in the world can guarantee complete protection under extreme wildfire conditions.
And that distinction matters.
